YCLSA.png YCLSA Press Statement, 3 June 2014 YCLSA encourages learners to apply now for university The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] is encouraging all learners to start applying for university for the year 2015. Grade 12 learners can apply for university now using their Grade 11 and 2014 mid-year results. If learners apply now this will go a long way in minimising unwanted situations associated with late registration like the stampede that occurred at the University of Johannesburg more than two years ago. As the YCLSA we continue to support the call by government that there’s an urgent need for one Central Applications Office, like the one used by institutions of higher learning in KwaZulu-Natal Province. This Central Applications Office will go a long way in removing the institutional policies of exclusion. As the YCLSA, working together with other progressive forces in particular the Progressive Youth Alliance, we will strive to ensure that the idea of one Central Admission Office becomes a reality in our country for the benefit of all as part of our struggle for free public quality education. We would also like the administration of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme to follow a similar model. The YCLSA wants registration and tuition fees standardised and if any, a thorough explanation of deviations, which must strictly be regulated. We call on all students to consider Vocational Education and Training (previously Further Education and Training) colleges as an important developmental path. Indeed many of the scarce and critical skills that our economy and development imperatives need can be acquired through these colleges. The YCLSA calls on Sector Education and Training Authorities to include a strong focus on the unemployed in their Sector Skills Plans, whilst taking care of the skills needs of the employed workers. In so doing, these institutions will contribute in skills development for the unemployed youth, thereby boosting their employability as well as self-employment opportunities. SETAs must participate rigorously in our fight to reduce unemployment.
