YEAR OF TEN!! …Despite the gravity of what could be, we actually stayed rather calm and maintained our sense of humor. I had to wait only 3 days before seeing my OB/GYN. Mike and I went to all doctor appointments together and this appointment was no different. We showed up the morning of January 19th, and were told that the doctor was out for a delivery but that the nurse practitioner would see me. While this wasn’t my first choice I knew from Mikes battle how fast things could go south, so we agreed. She was very confident that we were dealing with a fibrocystic mass, but wanted me to have a mammogram to confirm. The best part of this day was as we were leaving Mike says to me, “They couldn’t send someone else to make the delivery, it had to be the doctor?” He thought the guy was out delivery some papers, um no Mike a baby, delivering a baby! Here is where I found out just how annoying the insurance/paperwork side of this process was going to be…I spent the next 4 days convincing the staff of the imaging center that I needed to have a mammogram, they could not comprehend that I was only 29 and did not have a baseline mammogram to provide them. Finally I got it worked out and my first mammogram was scheduled for 1/27. I went alone to this appointment. While you could see the mass from across the room, unfortunately the mammogram did not show it. We had to tape a metal BB on my chest and redo the mammogram for them to be able to see the mass. It was decided that I should immediately go and have an ultrasound for further evaluation. I had the U/S and was told to wait for the radiologist, it was an imaging center so she was on site and could provide the results immediately. This woman whose name I don’t remember, who I never met before that day and who I never saw again walked in and said, “On a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being cancer your mass is a 7” What? I just came for a mammogram for you to tell me it was a fibrocystic mass, what just happened? Oh and not only was there one mass there was two…here is the name of a surgeon and you have an appointment with him tomorrow…
