The blast targeted the residence of a local tribal leader and a gathering of Houthi fighters. Media reports stated that dozens of people were killed and wounded. The attack followed a bombing at a Houthi checkpoint in the town on 11 November, which killed at least six and as many as nine Houthi gunmen. The bombing reportedly occurred in the al-Wathba area. The attack was claimed by the Sunni militant group, Ansar al-Sharia (AS). AS is affiliated to al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).
