YES!!!! After three years of trying to write a decent query letter for my novel I think I finally have one! Writing this bloody thing has been harder than writing the book itself! Comments welcome. Dear Sir / Madam, I submit for your interest my novel Strangeworld, the first book in a planned children’s fantasy series. It is a tongue-in-cheek reworking of many of the well-known tropes of classic fairy-tale, wrapped up in an epic narrative. The plot follows a ragtag band of thieves hired to kidnap a princess, who get rather more than they bargained for and wind up embroiled in a power struggle between three warring kingdoms. A mixture of the familiar and the new, children should fall in love with its fast-paced adventure, bedtime-story-like quality, cartoon characters and vibrant sense of fun and humour. Older readers, meanwhile, may be drawn to the complex, multi-layered plot and the deeper ideas beneath the surface. Inspired by such modern works of fairy-tale as Neil Gaiman’s “Stardust” and Terry Pratchett’s “Discworld”, it draws on classical and Norse mythology, my own interest in world history, and certain elements of Buddhist philosophy. I have been writing for ten years, and Strangeworld is the first novel I have written that I feel to be of publishable standard. I have a degree in History, which has informed my world-building of Terúvial, the setting for the story. I believe that my series has the potential to stand out in a market which seems currently crowded with more serious, mature, ‘darker’ fantasies. I have included a copy of the synopsis, as well as an extract of the first three chapters. I hope these will give you some sense of the tone and direction of my novel, and if they are sufficient to whet your appetite, I look forward to hearing from you. Yours faithfully, James A. Gravil
