In 1942 the American Army set up a naval base in Bora Bora and built the first airport which is now still used on Motu Mute. After the war, copra and vanilla were the primary economic importance for the local islanders until tourism gradually took over after 1960. Today Copra and Vanilla are still very much found around the islands but not too much on Bora Bora.
