YGGNRD-India’s event “My Play, My Place” gnrd.net/seemore.php?id=1188 On November 22 and 23 2014, The Global Network for Rights and Development’s Youth Group (YGGNRD) in India held an event titled “My Play, My Place”. The event was held at a playground located in ‘Noor Nagar’, New Delhi, where the playground has turned into a dumping location for garbage. This waste poses a serious health risk and many members of the community have been suffering from different illnesses as a result. YGGNRD-India managed to gather children in the area, teaching them firstly the importance of their rights. The group then organised a series of activities, from football to other local games. After playing with the children, they divided the entire playground into different sections and started cleaning the smaller section first with the children on Saturday and then another section on the Sunday. YGGNRD-India raised issues about cleanliness, sanitation and the unhygienic environment in which these children are living today. During these activities, YGGNRD taught the children information about the different diseases and illnesses that people might suffer from and the impact that untreated waste can have on health and lives. They ended the 2 day event by asking everyone to shout out loud: “My Play, My Place”. The GNRD youth group in India insists on the importance of the local administration’s role in Noor Nagar to clean up the playground and prevent it from turning into a dumping ground. This is especially important following the endless complaints from locals, demanding the reduction of the smell and mosquitoes resulting from dumping, which deprives the children of their right to have a proper place to play in, and contributes to the increasing rate of illness.
