YISAU NEWS UPDATE; On a day the ruling People’s Democratic Party, PDP, held its special national convention, a faction, comprising at least seven of its governors as well as a number of stalwarts emerged. At a news conference in Abuja, Abubakar Kawu Baraje, a former acting National Chairman of the PDP, was announced as the Chairman of the breakaway faction, while a former Osun State Governor and ousted National Secretary of the PDP, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, was announced as the National Secretary. Governors that openly associated themselves with the ‘new PDP’ include those of Jigawa, Kwara, Adamawa, Niger, Kano, Sokoto, Rivers. They had been fingered as promoters of an association, Voice of the People’s Party, which is awaiting registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. They leaders said their decision was based on the internal wranglings that has engulfed the PDP with no signs of peace. The faction accused the presidency in connivance with the Bamanga Tukur-led national executive of running the ruling party like a personal fiefdom, as against what the vision of the founding fathers. In his addressing, the new factional Chairman, Baraje, at a press conference, expressed worry by the “increasing repression, restrictions of freedom of association, arbitrary suspension of members and other such violations of democratic principles by a faction of our party led by Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.” According to him, while the chieftains have done everything humanly possible to bring to the attention of critical stakeholders within the party the dangers inherent in the course being charted by that leadership, it has become very clear that the desperate permutations towards 2015 general elections have blinded certain people from the consequences of their actions.
