YO FRIENDS! I participated in a most excellent project last fall with a great friend and supporter of mine, Peter Estabrooks. We are running the project again this Sunday (starting 08:30 at Cafe Beano in Calgary). Please come join in if youre able. The project is a practice of direct philanthropy and the format is both simple and easy to replicate. My hope is that my friends in other cities, provinces/states, countries and continents will pick up the idea and run with it! You, with friends or alone, dress in multiple layers of clothing (a couple shirts, sweaters, jacket, multiple hats, gloves, tights and pants) that you no longer wear or use and head out on a short run. Along the way, you disrobe, leaving the (cleaned!) jackets, sweaters, pants, mitts/gloves, scarves, toques on benches, tables or other places. When you end back at your beginning point youre left in your own shorts/base tights and tee. Our run occurs downtown and in the past we have left the apparel in spots known as common hang-outs for homeless people in Calgary. The run is short and easy (4-6K), helps clean out your own closet, and shares with others in a direct and meaningful way. Ive done much work in the past in research and consulting for homelessness organizations and programs in Alberta as well as worked in shelters and detox centres. While this running project doesnt contribute directly to the cessation of homelessness, it helps share needed items with others as we head into winter months. Im a big fan of harm reduction! Come out and join us if youre in Calgary. If not, try out your own run and post some photos. Id love to see this idea travel around the world. Please share this post on your own or friends profiles!
