YOGA & ENLIGHTENMENT - HOW CLOSE, HOW FAR? By the way, the word Yoga itself means enlightenment in its complete & real sense of the word. It comes from the sanskrit root yuj which means to join / yoke / integrate two or more things. On a very primary level it encompasses uniting the physical actions such as for e.g. (in Twists we need to Unite the following actions - 1. Chest up 2. Rib cage up 3. Tummy tuck 4. Lower back concave. 5. Shoulders - 1 pushing forward other pulling back 6. Face relaxed 7. Brain calm .... etc.) So many actions - all in unison. 1st step in Yogasana. Slightly advanced students might start integrating their ujjayi / normal breathing with all the above physical actions. Then their is the concept of Drishti (focused gaze) which might become possible as one advances in his daily practice. Which is more concerned with the mind than anything else. Later on even the subtle aspects such as intellect, ego & emotions will also be needed to be integrated in the practice of Asana. Thus on any level & type of Yoga - Union of all the aforesaid actions is to be achieved. Now on a very advanced level, Yoga is the union of the individual soul (self- atman) with the universal soul (Self - Paramatman). So the practice of Asana or even Pranayama or shuddhi kriyas are a necessary basic step towards the ultimate goal - i.e Enlightenment or Samadhi. They are the main precursors to understanding & effecting the true Yoga - Union. Yoga Light & love!
