YOM KIPPUR/SHABBAT SHALOM -- THE VALUE OF YOUR OWN SOUL May we appreciate this day as we follow it into Yom Kippur. May the great themes of this day open us up to fresh possibility, and may we encounter each other with gentler and more understanding hearts. May our commitment to community brings us joy and satisfaction, and may we leave this place stronger, as we make our trace. May we enjoy good health and cultivate compassion for the brokenness within us and for those in our lives who are having difficulty. May our teshuvah be honest and complete as we turn our sights to Sukkot -- the conclusion of our High Holydays. I offer blessings of inspiration, patience, hope, and energy to each of us, as we make our way. This evening, as part of our theme: Oh! The Places Youll Go -- Ill be speaking about challenges and opportunities to deepen our relationship with Israel -- and tomorrow morning, as part of the Yizkor service, my topic will be: Under the Sea: The Book of Jonah as a Guide to Mourning and Memory. TONIGHT -- KOL NIDRE @ 7:00 All of our sacred spaces are open this evening. Services (both in the Social Hall (Nachat/Selah) and in the Sanctuary), begin promptly at 7:00. These services help to create a gentle and joyful container for our spiritual work in these next 25 hours. We are asked to participate in singing and offering our presence, as we are encouraged to leave much of what we would like to shed, behind. We are grateful for the many who are helping to lead and who create a welcoming space for our prayer, silence, and contemplation. YK/SHABBAT MORNING -- GMAR HATIMAH TOVAH Services in the sanctuary begin @ 8:45 -- Ken Platt (and his father George) will lead our morning service -- as we enact the ways that our tradition has approached the ineffable and as we consider our own mortality through our gathering, prayer, singing and learning. As part of the heart of our experience, there is Yizkor, and as part of Musaf -- the Avodah Service, and Elah Ezkerah. Tot Services are at 9:00; Hineni services @ 10:00, and Youth Services (youth-led) @ 11:00. YK/SHABBAT AFTERNOON -- LEARNING At 3:15, Cathy Schechter will present learning on the Jewish concept of the Evil Inclination (Yetzer haRa). Also at 3:15, Rabbi Gail Swedroe will lead study on the significance of teshuvah. At 4:15, all are invited to hear from our CAA Youth, as many reflect on their experience in Israel this summer. YK/SHABBAT AFTERNOON/EVENING -- THE GATES ARE CLOSING Our Minchah service, led by David Goldblatt, will begin at 5:15. Note: this is slightly earlier than our schedules have indicated. Members of the Worob Family will chant/read the Book of Jonah. Around 6:45, our Neilah service will begin. For many, this is the highlight of the arc of Yom Kippur -- all are invited to this (relatively) brief service, as we stand together in community, in front of the open ark, and offer our individual prayers before God, in this new year. Our services will conclude around 7:45, and all are invited to participate in our Sisterhood-sponsored Break-the-Fast (Social Hall), immediately following. As we pace ourselves and devote our time to a fuller experience of Yom Kippur, may we be rewarded with meaning and a freshness of perspective. May our actions be blessed, and may we have the merit to gather regularly to uplift and aid our spirits. Please enjoy one of my favorite pieces from the Yom Kippur liturgy -- the incomparable Leib Glantz (1898-1964), offering Ki Hinei Kachomer -- https://youtube/watch?v=SJeOp744XU4 Gmar Hatimah Tovah -- May We All be Sealed in the Book of Life for Prosperity, Generosity, Resoluteness, and Tenderness. Shabbat Shalom!
