[YONGOLAWA CHABE!!!]: MOTA ENGIL TO RETRENCH STAFF AFTER JOYCE BANDA ELECTION LOSS, EMPLOYEES DOWN TOOLS Work at of the country’s leading construction companies, Mota Engil came to a standstill earlier today after over 300 workers protested over unpaid allowances. There were angry demonstrations at the company’s Mwanza site camp when employees demanded that they be paid their monies. The group which comprises of labourers and steel fixers have vowed never to return to work till their concerns have been addressed. During the strike, Police were called in to secure the camp and teargas was fired to dispense the angry crowd which pelted stones at the Mota Engil management that visited the site trying to address them. The workers are being owned by Mota Engil, MK20, 000 each and the company says cannot pay them at this stage. The workers who downed their tools are the ones working at the site for the construction of rail line passing through Malawi from Mozambique. This comes on the footsteps of emerging reports that the company, is set for a massive retrenchment following an election loss by former Malawi President Joyce Hilda Mtila Banda and her People’s Party last month. The company will retrench most of its staff as it’s feared they may lose most of the business in Malawi as a result of their political association with former President Banda who favoured them heavily in almost all government contracts. The company is reported to have invested so much in the campaign of Mrs Joyce Banda but that did not bring out the desired results hence the planned scaling down in staff. As part of their business deals, former President Joyce Hilda Mtila Banda now owns a stake in Mota Engil and the company bought 150 trucks and construction equipment for Mrs Banda. The trucks and equipment are managed by one of Mrs Banda’s sons, Roy Kachale and most of it has been hired back to Mota Engil. Efforts by us to talk to Mota Engil Human Resources Manager a Mr Kaesera proved futile as he kept on saying, he would return back the call to Innocent Mawaya. As we went to press, the Human Resource Manager had not returned Mawaya’s call. Wachoka! Wachoka! Wachoka!!! THIS WAS YONGOLAWA CHABE, THE BIG ONE COMING. JOYCE BANDA BP LOADING!!!
