YORUBA MOVIES AND BASTARDIZATION OF ISLAMIC NAMES Dear friends. Im excited to have you on this platform. I will like to share with us excerpts from the much awaited book, Muslims and the Threats of the Media and why I strongly believe that we can achieve Project 50, 000 Copies. In one of the chapters, entitled: Portrayal of Muslims in Movies, I wrote: ...The Yoruba movies are known for bastardizing Islamic names. Apart from the fact that their movies are poorly scripted and badly translated into English in most cases, they have the most funny but terrible titles, which blaspheme Islam. The only thing they know how to do best is glorifying witchcraft and propagating fetish practices. Interestingly, the leading actors in Yoruba genre of movies are Muslims (the likes of Adebayo Salami, Yinka Qadri, Taiwo Hassan, and Abdulkareem Adepoju popularly known as Baba Wande, among others), yet the bastardization of the most beautiful Islamic names abound in their films. We have gathered a long list of such movies, but to mention few are Basirat Baseje, Aminatu Pa-pa-pa, Osanle Modinat, Sikiratu Sindodo, Kudi Klepto, Jelili Oniso, Amisu, Kamilu Kompo, Awalu ati Awawu and Muniru ati Ambali. (let me skip some parts of the book...) Movies like this continued to flourish because they were not screened by National Film & Video Censors Board before they found their ways into the market. Besides, the attitude of Muslim organizations toward negative portrayal of Muslims in movies has not been encouraging. Instead of frowning at these movies publicly, they commit worst offence by rewarding these actors with religious chieftaincy titles. This is the sad situation of Muslims in Nigeria.
