YOU MUST REMEMBER THIS: 72 years ago today, one of the great Hollywood classics premiered in New York City. Originally titled Everybody Goes To Ricks, at various times, George Raft and Ronald Reagan were in consideration for the male lead. Hedy Lamarr might have been the female lead. Ultimately, Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart were cast in the lead roles — with one thing in common. Neither on wanted to be in the movie. Before filming, they met for lunch. Bergman remembered that the only subject they found in common was how much they both wanted to get out of ‘Casablanca.’ ” Dont forget, no one involved with its production expected it to be anything out of the ordinary. It was just one of hundreds of pictures produced by Hollywood every year. The stars were concerned that the Casablanca script was unfinished. Unanswered was the central question - whether Ilse would stay in Morocco with her lover, cafe operator Rick, or escape with her husband, Victor. During filming, since Bergman didnt know how the movie would end, she didnt know how to play toward the ending. Director Michael Curtiz told her to play it just like in real life — right down the middle. It was agreed to film two endings. After the first ending was shot — Ilse’s escape with Victor — it was mutually decided that it was the logical ending to “Casablanca.” A second version was never made. The movie was nominated for eight Oscars, winning three (Outstanding Motion Picture, Best Director, Best Writing - Screenplay). Bogart was nominated, but didnt win while Bergman was not even nominated. 1n 1998, on the American Film Institutes 100 Years...100 Movies list, Casablanca was selected as the #2 on the list of the all-time greatest movies.
