YOU SHALL NOT PASS! The Constitutional Court just came out with a 5 to 4 ruling that the Senate amendment violates Article 68, and is declared unconstitutional. Article 68 prohibits those trying to gain power via unconstitutional ways. The attempt to establish a fully-elected Senate was seen as the attempt by MPs to further expand their power into the upper-chamber. According to the 2007 Constitution, the Senate is meant to be independent and separated from the House of Rep. in order to perform most effectively in their role of approving legislations. However, Gov’t argue that the power of the Senate to appoint important political posts makes them extremely powerful, and so powerful that they should be accountable to the people through elections. What do we make of this?
