YULETIDE 2014 - MY FAVORITE versions of a CHRISTMAS CAROL: #9 THE STINGIEST MAN IN TOWN (1978) - I admit for this being a bit a nostalgia piece. I was lucky enough to see the 2nd to last Rankin & Bass production first run. But it does have a lot going for it. Based on the BBC TV Musical of 1956 starring Sherlock Holmes himself, Basil Rathbone, but instead we have Walter Matthau singing the titular part. And when I mean singing, I mean singing. This animated version is a bit shorted than the original but the managed to cram every song into its run-time. It makes this film almost all sing talking and pushes this production into Operetta. Relativity faithful to the source material and a decent supporting cast, including Tom Bosley, makes this a delight and a good ice break for the really young fan.
