YUSUF ALI RECOMMENDS DEATH PENALTY FOR CORRUPT PUBLIC OFFICIALS A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mallam Yusuf Ali has called on Nigerian government to adopt Chinese and Saudi Arabia death penalty models for punishment of official corruption. He said death penalty for any government official and individual found guilty of corrupt practices may appear so drastic but “we all agree that the situation in Nigeria requires drastic suggestions and measures”. Mallam Ali who spoke in Ilorin yesterday at a public lecture organized by Amicus International Club held at Africa Peoples Hall, GRA, Ilorin, said corruption had made both the rich and the poor poorer in Nigeria. He said “those who are stealing our money are also poorer because what is the essence of money you are stealing and you cannot display whatever you have acquired with it. You built houses outside Nigeria, you cannot be proud to tell people that you have such houses. You bought big cars and you kept them as if they are items of antiquity. So, in the short run, in the long run, everybody is poorer. And money that ought to have been used for development purposes end up being spent to mal-nourishing our economy to nourish economy of the countries that have already nourished”. He identified corruption as the major challenge of governance, democracy and rule of law in Nigeria thereby crippling basic health and educational services and other social infrastructure”. The Chairman, Amicus International Club, Justice Mustapha Akanbi (rtd) said the lecture was organized as part of its moves to ensure corrupt free and fair elections in the 2015, noting that the programme would be a continuous exercise.
