Ya know Ive worked for a retail company (first Safeway and now Starbucks) since I was 16 (Im 19 nearing 20 now) and on the whole I really like it but there always been one thing that has made me absolutely sick about retail: the fact that we throw away literally tons of food a year while somewhere in the world there are people, more importantly there are children and babies, who are, as I sit here typing this, literally starving to death. We see them everyday in the news; children who are as skinny as Holocaust victims begging for scraps. Yet retail just throws away tons and tons of food. I just threw out an entire bag of sandwiches and there must have been 15-20 in there, just because they werent sold so as per rules of my company theyre considered expired. That bag could have fed an entire family in a third world country happily for a week yet it went in a dumpster. Im not saying its the retail companies fault because they have to throw these out, if we dont we could get sued for selling expired food, but something is very wrong when we throw out so much food yet millions of people starve to death a year.
