Ya know...obesity, in this country particularly, is being approached from the wrong direction. Up to now, we have assessed the epidemic as a deficiency of the human condition. We act as if the fat people have somehow done something wrong in their lives and are deserving of their declining health. Weight gain is actually a survival mechanism. The human body stores fat from energy dense foods, which are widely available in nature during harvest periods prior to cooler, less plentiful months. We naturally crave the sweets and sours so our bodies can absorb the sustenance. In other words, we ate a ton of berries and grains and put on weight so we wouldnt starve during winter. NATURE/SCIENCE/EVOLUTION!!! But today, we have one of the worst things to attack the human condition...capitalism. Businesses take advantage (and trust me...I have a history in marketing. They know exactly what they are doing) of the bodys desire for sweet and sour, and fill our grocery stores with low cost, energy dense woods...but the winter never comes. Bloomberg had the right idea in NYC with the reduction of sugary drinks...they are certainly a primary player in this epidemic. But it is also the candy (which I LOVE me some Sweettarts), cereals, ice cream, etc... Until we, as a population, decide to exert some control over what we eat and, more importantly, what we deem FOOD, we will continue to get fatter.
