Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals. -Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Today we celebrate an iconic civil rights leader who stood for justice and equality for all. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. understood the roots of oppression and fought the systems of colonialism with the truth, as well as forging a framework of nonviolence movements to demand freedom to live freely and justly. Our younger generation continue the good fight Dr. King would have approved and appreciated. Diné youth representing the Nihígaal Béé Iiná group, are marching from Dzil Nahodixlhi to challenge the mindset of short-term profit over Nahasdzaan Nihima/ Mother Earth doó Yadixlhixl Nihita/ Father Sky. Environmental and social injustice, the symptoms of colonialism, continue today because we still have to not only fight exploitative resource extraction industries, but we must also continue the struggle of educating our own people on these old monsters with new faces. Human rights continue to be violated on so many levels and we have to continue to speak up, stand up, and challenge these systems that continue to oppress us. As we walked with our youth yesterday, we shared stories, songs, and hopes of what a future without abuse, violence, exploitation, racism, and oppression would be like. I admire their tremendous strength, courage, and resilience as they lead this collective struggle for Hózhó. There is a growing sense among our youth that change is coming. New Warriors are rising and let us help them continue this good fight for the people and for the land! Nizhoni! Stand for what is right, just, and equal for all humanity.
