Yabanci: Coming of Age film Explores the Concept of Home Cairo, Egypt December 1, 2014 Yabanci, or The Foreigner in Turkish, is a film by the young Egyptian filmmaker Mohamed Mo Faramawy. Recepient of the Nestor Almendros Award for Cinematography, the film explores the struggles of a Third Culture Kid about to leave Istanbul, the city where hed spent the past five years of his life, to study in America. As he celebrates his last night in Istanbul with his best friend, Mina, they realize the uncertainty the future holds. Faramawy was the director, film editor and lead actor in the film. Educated at NYUs Tisch School of the Arts, Faramawy says he initially began the process of working on the film with the intention of it being a comedy about being an international student in Turkey; I knew I wanted to shoot in Istanbul...Its very diverse, every single street is completely different depending on who lives there and the immigrant population, but its also a very nationalistic place and you have to adapt to its ways. As he worked on the film more extensively, the story line developed into one that was more realistic than hed originally intended, It became a portrait of the things we take for granted, the ridiculous arguments you have with your family, the inside jokes between friends and the idea of not taking advantage of an opportunity before it’s too late, he says of the film-making process. The shooting of the award-winning film took place over the span of little over 4 days. I had the most amazing crew, with the best attitude...it was very special, says Faramawy, attributing the success of the film to his team. A senior at NYU at the time, the young filmmaker was supported by the school during his time working on the project. Faramawy is also a keen writer of fiction, mainly screenplays. One of his pieces will be published in Rowayats upcoming January issue. His current projects include serving as a documentary editor on the crew of Homebound, a film tracing the directors immigration to the United States and how New York became their family home. Faramawy hopes to work on a film set in the Arab World, preferably Cairo or Beirut, in the near future.
