Calici is one of two viruses responsible for most upper respiratory infections, or “kitty colds,” in cats. It is commonly found in cats that have been housed in a shelter, as these were prior to their arrival at Coastal Pet Rescue. Cats that have been infected with calicivirus can become lifelong carriers. This does not mean that they are contagious or symptomatic all of the time. If the virus was to become active again their symptoms would be similar to the Flu and can include a runny nose, sneezing, lethargy, a fever, achy joints and disinterest in food. Barring any stress, it is possible that once adopted, the pet may never show signs of Calici again. However, they cannot go to a home with other cats that have never been diagnosed with Calici because of their potential to carry the virus.
