Yamaha is not a brand name that enters many conversations when discussing quality PA speaker cabinets. The favorable remarks generally go to their trusty NS10 studio monitor and classy mixing consoles. OK, so after weeks of heated research, I test drove a pair of Yamaha DXR12 powered speaker cabinets. I always say the best way to test a speaker is not to look for a great sound, but instead endeavor to make it sound bad...really bad. Well, despite my grandest efforts, I could not produce even a remotely bad sound with these remarkable speakers. They are actually comparable in many ways, to my FBT ProMaxx 14 cabs, which remain my personal favorites. The DXR12 is a LOUD, butter-smooth, and durable PA cab with seemingly no limits or shortcomings at all. When Sound on Sound reviews and tests something, you may rest assured that it has been pushed, played, beaten and basically hung out to dry. Nonetheless, these cabs kept asking for more, particularly where volume, coverage, bass, and c-l-a-r-i-t-y was concerned. Kudos to Yamaha and speaker giant NEXO for a collaboration well-worth both hearing and purchasing. NOTE: I almost bought the 15 version, in an effort to enhance bass without a sub. After listening, I can honestly tell you, the 12 cab is more than capable of gut-punching thump without a hint of flabbiness. Im guessing that with paired with the DXS sub, these would be more or less unstoppable. God bless digital speaker technology! usa.yamaha/products/live_sound/speakers/active_speakers/dxr/dxr12/
