Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp, #Damascus, 13-12-2014: Residents of Yarmouk camp are warning of an imminent environmental disaster and the collapse of more residential buildings in the besieged camp. The Palestinian Diaspora Media Centre (SHTAT-PAL) reported that three residential buildings in Yarmouk have already collapsed in the past week due to relentless bombardment of the refugee camp with missiles and heavy artillery by Assad’s forces together with a number of regime-affiliated militias including the ‘National Defence Force,’ the ‘Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine – General Command’ (PFLP-GC) and Fateh al-Intifada. The daily bombing led to severe erosion of the buildings’ foundations and ultimately to their collapse, explained the SHTAT-PAL, adding that dozens more residential buildings are threatened with collapse at any moment due to the relentless bombardment. The group stressed that this poses another grave danger to the remaining residents in the camp where around 20,000 Palestinian refugees, many of them women and children, are living in horrendous conditions, with the relentless shelling, siege and destruction/collapse of buildings threatening an environmental catastrophe for the people. The regime siege, now into its second year, has already led to a humanitarian crisis in the camp, which has been exacerbated by Assad’s forces cutting the water supply to the camp over three months ago, as well as by the daily bombing and the lack of food and medicine.
