Yasin Malik arrested in nocturnal raid Front Holds ‘Anti-VDC March’ In Srinagar; Leaders, Activists Detained Srinagar, Aug 12: Police arrested Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Muhammad Yasin Malik during a nocturnal raid at his Maisuma residence here, ahead of his scheduled march on Monday in support of disbanding the infamous Village Defence Committees who are “committing massive human rights violations” in Jammu province. Reports said a large contingent of police cordoned Malik’s house around 4.00 am and took him into custody. He was whisked away to Kothibagh police station and continues to be lodged there. During a press conference on Sunday, Malik had announced to hold the ‘peace-march’ in Lal Chowk at 2 pm Monday. Despite Malik’s arrest, senior JKLF leaders led by its vice-chairman Advocate Bashir Ahmad Bhat took out the march from JKLF headquarters at Maisuma. Shouting anti-VDC slogans, the procession marched through Madina Chowk and Haji Masjid, demanding disbanding of the “civil militia.” However, when the procession reached Budshah Chowk a large contingent of police swung into action and detained JKLF leaders and activists. Earlier addressing the procession, Bhat accused the government of not allowing peaceful demonstrations against what he said the reign of terror unleashed by VDCs in Kishtwar and others areas of Jammu. “The so-called rulers are not allowing us to even demonstrate politically and show solidarity with our brethren in Jammu region. We strongly condemn Malik’s arrest,” Bhat said. Bhat said the peace march was held to impress upon the rulers to disband and disarm this “anti-people force” immediately. “This force is like Ikhwanis who unleashed reign of terror in Kashmir. They are army men without uniform and any bad deed by them is direct offence committed by Indian army and forces. It is high time when this brutal force used to suppress people of Jammu region especially Muslims should be disbanded and disarmed,” he said. In his message from custody, Malik made a fervent appeal to people of Jammu to uphold age-old communal harmony and maintain brotherhood.
