Yatta Schools Training Amiran Kenya & Yatta CDF Prepare the ground for AFK Yatta Schools Project An important step in the “Amiran Farmer’s Kit for Secondary Schools in Yatta Constituency”, a joint project of Amiran Kenya and Yatta CDF, was taken on November 17th at the Matuu Memorial Secondary School in Matuu Town in Yatta Constituency. Honorable Charles Kilonzo, MP for Yatta, whose brain child is this project, hosted a team lead by Amiran’s Integrated Projects Manager Christopher Nzuki and Chief Agronomist Wilfred Muthamia, who came to train sixty Principals, Agriculture Teachers and Farms Managers from fifteen Secondary Schools in Yatta Constituency. Also trained and certified were several members of the CDF Committee and District Agricultural officers, who will represent, together with Amiran’s Agronomists, the implementation arm for the project. As part of the project Amiran Farmer’s Kits, each with an extra Farmer’s Greenhouse, making two greenhouses per kit, have been installed in 15 secondary schools in Yatta Constituency. This is the first phase of a project whose aim is to install the Amiran Farmer’s Kit in every Secondary School in Yatta Constituency. In every school these AFK’s will serve to grow food for the school and as a classroom educating the next generation of Kenya farmers on modern agricultural technologies and methods with an strong emphasis on Agri Business. This initiative comes at a time when food security is a critical issue for the country and seeks a long term approach geared towards opening the door for the next generation of farmers to the opportunities of Agri Business based on modern agricultural technologies and know-how. While the average age of the Kenya farmer is 58, the average age of farmers growing with the Amiran Farmer’s Kit is 36. By bringing this new approach to the schools Amiran’s goal, together with Yatta CDF and Yatta MP Honourable Charles Kilonzo, who has been the driving force behind this initiative, is to bring the average age of those involved in Agriculture as a business down even more. All participants of the AFK training spent the day in the classroom learning the theory and on the ground at the Amiran Farmer’s Kit site erected in the Matuu School. At the end of the day Honourable Kilonzo awarded certificates to the participants on behalf of Yatta CDF and Amiran. Amiran’s team on the ground also included Susan Kiambi, Pauline Kavita and Eli Sande.
