Yeah, FB, I admit - Tuesday is on my mind... This notice from a friend – and one I respect – appeared in my FB news feed – and no I didn’t respond and I’m not naming names. I could not change my friend’s opinion anymore than they could change mine. But I had to agree that the issues the post brought out are good reasons for going to the polls tomorrow – here is the quote: “NC Early voting begins tomorrow. Education for my son is at the top of my list of concerns. I support public charter schools... Democrats do not support charter schools. Republicans do support charter schools. Public charter schools do not receive any money from tax payers (which I am one of) to pay for buildings and public charter schools do not receive any lottery funds, which were intended for all public schools. These points will influence my vote. I, on the other hand, do not support charter schools and while my friend is probably correct that taxpayer money does not go for buildings, rest assured it goes – to the tune of more than $300 million a year and growing - for a lot of other things. See below: Camel city dispatch – Winston-Salem “Charter schools are quasi-public schools which receive taxpayer funds. The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System, which is already strapped for cash and looking at budget cuts that could cost around 300 jobs, has to give $4.4 million a year to local charter schools- an amount that will increase by an additional $100,000 for the 2014-15 school year. The state of North Carolina spent a total of $304.7 million for the 2013-14 school year, and that doesn’t even include diverted federal funds.” Other issues I have with Charter Schools – briefly – I can document them if you would like. No busses – or the miniscule that do have little/no public oversight. Not required to provide meals – certainly not free meals. State funds do not revert to the State at the end of the fiscal year Are not required to have all teachers licensed There are more – and I agree with my friend – Republicans support CS and for the most part Democrats do not and that’s a very good reason to go vote tomorrow.
