Yeah I heard in recovery circles (orbit) ....Well ...sympathy is seeing someone in a hole, jumping in and both drown....Empathy, on the other hand is standing at the rim of the hole, commenting that the individual is deciding to stay in the hole, throwing them a ladder to get out (option) not always possible...emergency only..., telling them that when they decide to come out of their own hole...., saying we will walk together. Dictionary .... sympathy falls between schitt and syphillis.
