Yeah the more I read and think the less Im sure of my previous belief in universal higher education, at least not in the current economic context. For example, two days ago Conor Friedersdorf at The Atlantic correctly observed that universally-funded free higher education would be a regressive scandal. Regular readers here should be familiar with why that is the case. State and local taxes are regressive and the people who go to college are from disproportionately affluent backgrounds and enjoy disproportionately affluent futures. Taxing everyone to fund those that go to college winds up being, in net, a transfer from the poor to the rich. Thoughts?
