Year 1983, I graduated from GEC as a 21 year old young boy. Campus placement was unheard of in those days. I was selected in 2 months as Technical Assistant ( Group C post) in ICAR. At the time of joining I was required to produce a certificate from Principal of the college. I proudly went to meet Professor HA Vacchani, the principal who also taught us Structural Engineering and presented the certificate for his signature. He gave a long glare at me and threw that paper aside. Without raising the pitch, he calmly told This is not what GEC students are for. Go and clear IES. Puzzled, I could only promise that I will put my sincere efforts and he took the paper back, signed it, stood and pat my back. That was the last time I met him. With a firm resolve, I cleared IES in 86. I wrote a letter to him. Dont know what was its fate. 31 years later, on the occasion of Guru Purnima, I renew my gratitude to you sir. Without you, I could not be, what I am. Deep regards.
