Year 9 Arts day at Ickworth ‘Framlingham College Arts Day’ - TopicsExpress

Year 9 Arts day at Ickworth ‘Framlingham College Arts Day’ saw 76 Year 9 pupils visit Ickworth House and gardens to absorb and react to the surroundings. Students were treated to Guided Tours, given by the National Trust volunteers, of the State Rooms and Basement, where they experienced how ‘the other half lived’; from learning that the Hervey family requested 30 foot high ceilings to create cleaner air for asthmatic family members, to discovering servants’ doors hidden behind paintings. They learned that those living in the basement had a stark experience; dark rooms and the machines of their trade nearby, and speaking tubes to contact those living upstairs (possibly the origin of the term ‘whistleblowers’). Miss Tooth documented the visual history of Ickworth with her students, showing, through photographs, the great differences between upstairs and downstairs. Mr Ashton’s group retired to the Earl’s summer-house to write poetry with coloured inks. Mrs Lyon challenged some by drawing with nature itself! Others drew the impressive façade onto clay tiles with help from Mrs Kendall whilst Miss Harry, with her groups, explored the surroundings through recording sounds and then creating short films. Mrs Jones’ groups used hand-drawn negatives and objects from the undergrowth to create cyanotypes while Mrs Mallett’s groups either painted in an Impressionist style en plein air onto wooden panels, or explored the process of making an etching on a zinc plate. All told, it was a visually varied day with plenty to do and see, and some memories that we hope will encourage them to return to further explore our rich heritage.
