Year 9 Rugby Team Continue Winning Streak The year 9 Rugby team continue where they finished last season… Winners!! The extended new fields at Rawlett HQ will improve the PE and Sports facilities still further and are surely now unrivalled in Tamworth and dare I say Staffordshire. After finally moving the rugby posts following the installation of the new cricket wicket and levelling the unique water jump down the 100m straight, the new rugby season could begin. It was only fitting that the reigning County Champions should start the season and they did no in emphatic style with a 34-10 victory against the plucky visitors from Alleynes, Uttoxeter. There were a number of changes for Rawlett including the introduction of a bunch of talented year 8 boys that made for a close fought battle but a performance that bodes well for the future. The leader of the backs and silky runner, Billy Green, along with pacey winger Parkes were of representing the school in Germany with Mrs Scott and the Comenius project. Relentless forward Pritchard has ankle ligament damage after mixing with the big boys at Tamworth Rugby Club. Top try scorer last year, Evans, has decided that home schooling is the future and is no longer on role and pocket rocket McMenemy is having new dentures for a brighter smile to go with his perfect side parting. So it was unfamiliar but exciting as the game kicked off in glorious sunshine with Mr Andy Pritchard as official RFU Society Referee in charge for the first time. Thankfully, some things never change and that is the performance of inspirational Captain Matthew Green who not only locked the scrum at number 8 but was the focus of all attacking play and more often than not the critical defender at the tackle area. In fact the whole back row including the galloping giraffe that is Jackson and the blonde Robbins on the open side whose tackling is Rawletts answer to England and Lions hero Peter Winterbottom, scourge of all number 10’s of the 80’s. Christophorou continues to develop as a rugby player and his work in the tight where only the brave may tread had a huge influence on the positive outcome of the game. Inevitably Green opened the scoring as Alleynes did not fancy getting in the way when he was in full flow and he doubled his tally soon after with some lovely hands in the backs that gave him a brace in the left corner. However, as the game warmed up so did the Alleyenians thirst for a contest. The scrum was keenly contested as was the breakdown with Nicholls and Reynolds to the fore. Scrum half, Phillips, forever combative s nipped and tackled with the help of his forwards and allowed Edgar and Norton to shift the ball as 10 and 12. All three were solid in defence. The replacement forwards from the year 8 squad did themselves proud and did not shirt their responsibilities or take a step backwards. The second half saw Rawlett defending their line for the majority of the play but significant turnovers at crucial times allowed the counter attack and some wonderful breaks and scores. The introduction of Willars into the backs, zipped the ball out from the ruck with greater speed and accuracy giving the outside backs half a gap and off they went. The victory was crowned with two tries from talented sportsman and all round good guy Heritage. On two occasions he outpaced the entire Allelynes defence with his effortless printing and speed endurance. His step is sublime, as are his hands, he does not miss tackles and always plays hard and within the spirit of the game. A Rawlett Hall of Famer already he is the template for the Sportsmen, we hopefully develop. However, whilst he and his fellow backs gain the headlines and the plaudits it is the forwards who decide who wins… and they all performed.
