Year in Review: The Westland Historic Village Park would like - TopicsExpress

Year in Review: The Westland Historic Village Park would like to thank all those that came out to visit us through 2014. As the year winds down and with us only having one more day in 2014 that we will be open we would like to take the time and remind you all of the different events and other amazing things that we at the museum were a part of. As the year began the staff at WHVP began planning the events for the year. Our Second Annual Bowling Fundraiser had 14 bowlers join us in Fabruary, even though it was cold. We had several raffle gifts, including a nights stay at FireKeepers Casino in Battle Creek. In May, our Commissioners created a new exhibit in our Carriage Shed. This exhibit revolves around our 1919 Model-T Fire Engine that was originally from Eloise. It includes several Fire Department items, but by no means is it finished. Eventually the Fire Department Exhibit will include more artifacts. We hope to create a section for a Police Department Display as well. In July, we were, once again, proud participants in the All American Cruise on Wayne Road. Don Nicholson is the Master Mind behind this event and we are extremely happy to help where and when we can. We hope to continue to play a part in this event in years to come. In September, several members of WHVP joined other volunteers at Blues, Brews and Barbeque. Fun was had by all at this still new event that the City of Westland hosts. In October, Sam Bernhardt and his father, Jim, contacted WHVP in hopes that a project could be put together so Sam could earn his Eagle Scout. It was suggested that some work could be done at Chubb Cemetery. Several grave markers, made of wood, have all but disintegrated. The agreed upon project is for Sam to create new markers made of more sturdy material and they will be weatherproofed. The project should be complete in April or May 2015. Starting at the beginning of summer, the task of doing a complete Artifact Inventory was started. It has been a long process, which will continue until it is finished. During the inventory many things were found that had previously been forgotten. For instance, WHVP staff did not know or had forgotten that Chubb Cemetery on Warren Road is one of our artifacts. Also discovered that we had a Lithograph of Major General William T. Sherman (whereabouts unknown until 12/13/14.) In November, John Glenn students came to the museum. Several teachers at Glenn and other schools have taken the opportunity to focus on local history. And the tour that the students from Glenn did not disappoint. Several Commissioners were on hand to explain the journey Westland took to beome a city; tour our 1890s Farm House; the former schools of Westland/Nankin/Wayne; our Fire Department Exhibit; and our Octagon House. In the Octagon House the students learned about Lucius Chubb. Lucius served in the Civil War and was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg. He died of his wounds a month later and was brought back to his home and is buried in Chubb Cemetery. In the year to come, we are planning several events for 2015. On March 21, 2015 we will have our 3rd Annual Bowling Event, this time at Westland Bowl. We hope to bring back the Armed Forces Day Event in May. And a dedication ceremony will take place once the work at Chubb Cemetery is completed. We hope to once again be a part of the All American Cruise (We love seeing the Antique and Classic Vehicles!) We hope that you have had a great 2014, just like we have. We also hope to see all of our visitors from the past years and some new friends in 2015 and years to come.
