Yearly Recap: April 18-20, Weekend 16: Heaven Is For Real, Johnny Depp Isnt! In one of the hardest, unpredictable and unexpected weekend of the year, came 15 new films. Of these films, 8 were noteworthy some unexpected. When early predictions came, no one really saw Heaven is For Real being a contender for the weekend. Most predictions had the Johnny Depp film Transcendence as the front runner. Heaven is For Real had debuted on Wednesday April 16, as the Number One Daily Film with $3.7 million followed with another $3.3 million on Thursday, for a $7 million 2-Day run. When the opening weekend was said and done the $12 million production had done $22.5 million for a number 2 debut. (Behind Captain America ahead of Rio). During its 117-day run, Heaven is For Real would gross $91.4 million. With $9.8 million in international sales, the film was a hit. Heaven is For Real came in as the Number 3 film of April, Number 10 of the Spring Season and a Top 40 finish to the year. Transcendence would go down as being one the biggest failures in the domestic and international box office of 2014. At one time predicted to do $30 million opening and a long range $120 million . The $100 million-Johnny Depp film opened on 3400 screens (Heaven is For Real opened on 1000 less) with a number 4 debuted of $10.8 million. Transcendence would go on to have a 63-day run of $23.2 million. While Internationally it fared well it was looked as failure as well earning $80 million. Thus for a world-wide total of $103.0 million. Transcendence would rank as the Number 7 Film of April. Disneynature Film have become a tradition around Earth Day, this year came the Documentary simply titled Bears. While no production cost was given, the film had to have been relatively inexpensive to produce. Bears opened at number 10 with $4.7 million dollars. Bears would go on to have a 91-day run of $17.7 million. Placing the documentary at the Number 9 film of April. The Wayans Brother have had great success stories with parodies (Scary Movie Franchise, White Chicks). A Haunted House 2 was a $4 million budgeted sequel to 2013s $40 million hit, A Haunted House. A Haunted House 2 wasnt as profitable as the first (possibly due to timing too close together). The film debuted as number 5 with $8.8 million. In the long run A Haunted House 2 would $17.3 million domestically and $6.6 million Internationally. A Haunted House 2 would be the Number 10 Film of April 2014. Also coming in as one of the biggest flops of the year is $25 million Indie film Fading Gigolo, written, directed and starring John Turturro. Fading Gigolo earned $3.8 million, while internationally it took-in $9.1million. Fading Gigolo came in as the Number 14 Film of April. While the Bollywood Romantic Comedy 2 States was an international hit. The $5 million dollar production would gross $2.2 million domestically, and $23 million in the international circuit. While placing as the Number 16 Film of April 2014. Hong Kong film That Demon With, marked the beginning on a great year for international film company China Lion. Demon would gross $172,000 domestically while international markets $20.3 million. While South Korean Indie Dance Film, Make Your Movie which is based off of Romeo and Juliet. The film would gross $125,000 domestically, it would gross $1.3 million in a seven-country release. Special Reissue: Recent Special Editions dont cut it in the mainstream box office. 2014 marked the 50th Anniversary of Godzilla. The $900,000 budgeted film had a 2014 run of $150,000. While its lifetime gross is $2.3 million.
