Yearly Recap: May 23-25 (26), Weekend 21: Sandler, Barrymore and The X-Men. Memorial Day Weekend came early in 2014. With 13 new releases, two of which were highly anticipated films of summer. One of the two, would go on to modest success, the other failed slightly. while six other tried to cash in on some of the leftovers. The X-Men Franchise is longest running franchise of the new millennium with seven films since 2000. X-Men: Days of Future Past was one of the most anticipated films of the summer and year. The Sequel-Prequel opened with one of the highest openers of the year (a four-day weekend) with $110.5 million. The $200 million budgeted film would ultimately go on to gross $233.9 million in its domestic run slightly under expectations of $250 million, yet still successful. While internationally the film double that with $512 million. X-Men Days of Future Past is the Number 4 Film of May 2014 and the Number 4 Film of the Summer with a possible Top 10 finish to the year. At least two more X-Men Films are planned with the next up in 2016. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore pair up again for the fourth time with the highly anticipated Blended. The film opened at number 3 with a $17.7 million debut. Blended had a 98-day run of $46.3 million run domestically, making it profit about $6 million. However due to the previous success the pair had, Blended was predicted to do $100 million. Blended doubled its budget in international market earning $80.5 million. Blended however would be the number 6 film of the month while posting number 25 for the summer. Words and Pictures is a romantic dramedy about an art teacher and english teacher who fall in love. While the film didnt catch on with film goers, it was critically acclaimed. The low budget film earned $2.1 million domestically and another $1.1 million internationally. The film is ranked at Number 15 of the month. There is a slight chance that the critically acclaimed film may have a chance of garnering some awards attention possibly an acting nod for Juliette Binoche. Bollywood Cinema has had a good track record with film being released over the Memorial Day weekend, this year is the $20 million dollar production of Kochadaiyaan (translated The King with The Long Curly Mane). The film performed on par with a Bollywood Domestic Release grossing $817,000. While in a 17-nation release the film would gross $120 million. The film would rank as the number 18 of the month. The remaining four films featured two success stories and two slight failures. Many reviewed Cold in July as a film with more twists and turns, carnage and blood from any drama. Cold in July was considered a failure grossing $423,000 domestically with no international release planned. the film would rank number 20 of May. The next two films would round out May as Number 23 and 25 films of the month. The international success The Dance of Reality is the autobiography of the film career of Alejandro Jodorowsky. The first film from the director had mixed reviews but would gross $294,000 domestic while grossing $7 million internationally. While the poorly reviewed Romantic Comedy with Pierce Bronson and Emma Thompson would do $7 million internationally while doing $267,000 domestically. Both films also had a $3 million dollar budget. The final film of the week is Documentary Gore Vidal; The United States of Amnesia really didnt catch on with movie goers only grossing $135,000.
