Yearly spout of insensitivity: Never forget 9/11? No. I want to forget. I think everyone should forget. Not forgetting has given us a string of wars that has cost more American lives than 9/11 itself and saddled a generation with PTSD. Not forgetting has left a region spanning almost 5,000 miles hopelessly destabilized, littered with death and broken lives, and entering yet another phase of ceaseless war and violence. Constantly replaying the traumas of that day demeans the event, never letting go of the titillating images and the almost-terror for most by televised proxy has numbed us to the gravity of the actual thing. Replaying the news coverage as a yearly ritual transforms 9/11 into a sick parody of itself that invokes The War of the Worlds. Its time to forget. The phrase is forgive and forget, and never forgetting implies never forgiving, and never forgiving means it will only happen again. And again. And again. And again.
