Years ago, I had the honor and privilege of working as the Strength Coach for a high school football program in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. To this day, the Head Coach of that program ranks as one of the finest, most authentic leaders I ever worked with in any sport. Upon assuming the post as his Strength Coach, my most immediate observation - and one of the many factors that made him such a quality leader - was the incredibly simplistic approach he had to communication. He placed expectations on his athletes in terms of work ethic, focus and self-respect. The exact same expectations he placed on himself. These expectations were articulated simply, repeated often and became the cornerstone of his teams success. In an age where trick plays, complex schemes and elaborate methodologies have become commonplace, this man instituted a basic offensive set with minimal variations. And it worked. Although I cant quote him verbatim because of how many years have past, I do remember the gist of his answer when I asked why simplicity was the core of his coaching philosophy - Because in life and sport, success is found by doing the fundamental things well In my life, Ive found that very little in business, relationships or athletics is actually complex. We just have a way of making things more complicated than they are. Strip it back to the fundamentals and perform them well. Thats about all its ever going to take to succeed.
