Years ago. Rich Hafstead was looking for an apartment in Manhattan, to be closer to the store. He went to an address where the super walked him down to a sub-basement. When the guy opened a door, Rich had already decided that he wasnt interested, but he stuck his head in, anyway. He was looking at a corridor, about six feet wide and twenty feet long. On one wall, there was a bank of about a hundred electric meters. The other had a similar number of gas meters. All were clicking aand buzzing away. At the far end of the corridor, he saw a door ajar, with a dangling lightbulb flickering weakly. He turned to the guy and asked, Is that the apartment down there? The guy shook his head. No. Thats the bathroom. THIS is the apartment. I miss New York.
