Years ago my son was in two clinical trials at the National Institutes of Health; one in genetics and one in infectious diseases. One particular trip, I was in Bethesda, Maryland, with my son and daughter when they were five and seven years old. Coleman went into anaphylactic shock soon after that Tim flew up from Dallas, Texas to join us. Once that crisis was over, we had the opportunity to see a psychologist that we had seen two years earlier. He was diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorder and autism. I have done my homework and did not come as a surprise. It actually was going to be a blessing as far as the school systems were concerned. As we arrived home on a hot July,3rd in Carrollton, Texas, My thoughts were so scattered. Our friends and missionaries from Nigeria were going to be arriving that afternoon to stay with us a couple of days. As fate would have it, our air-conditioner went out. Luckily, they lived in Nigeria and it didnt bother them. I had just about had it! I reached to squeeze the back of my neck just for some relief...whats this? The pain was so intense I could barely touch my neck and my fingers were so tender I could barely touch anything! I could not use my fingers properly, what in the world? This would be the beginning of my Lupus journey. Then my friend asked me how is your walk with the Lord? What? She just asked me what? Im trying to balance all these things spinning around in the air and she asked me what? At first it stung me and then it broke my heart. I was so consumed with exhaustion, fear, anger, financial concerns, and physical pain and concern for the welfare of both my children and my husband. Jesus was the love of my life and I prayed to him every day that He wasnt first that day everything else was. Dont be afraid to ask someone you love, really love how is your walk with Lord? If their heart is tender and receptive, it may be a game changer! Proverbs 27:9 “The heartfelt counsel of a friend is as sweet as perfume and incense.” (NLT)
