Years ago while researching the ghost story about La Llorona, a tortured female spirit that, it is told, haunts the banks of rivers and irrigation ditches, weeping for her lost children, I ran across the idea that the jaguar and La Llorona could be one and the same. La Lloronas spirit cannot rest because, in a state of fury and despair over her abandonment by her lover and father of her children, she drowned them. Indigenous people of mesoamerica and their descendants tell the story to their children to keep them away from these locations next to rivers and irrigation ditches, not only because they could drown in the water, but because apparently the jaguar often patrols these areas hunting prey. Jaguar as La Llorona.
