Years back, I spent countless hours roaming Central California in search of the best tacos. I eventually settled on Jennys (15 miles south of town) as my go-to, but I remember the entire journey well. Like the time Mike and I covered 150 miles on a Saturday afternoon, sampling goods from Exeter to Madera; that was the first time I had nopales. Or the time we stayed up late to explore the illegal weekend carts popping up in the margins of town. Or the time we went to...well, there are lots of memories. We found mild disappointments here and there, but far more excitement, and a tally of tacos that Id never divulge to my doctor (haha, I dont go to the doctor). Actually, thats what a lot of my early food photography focused on, its still something I fixate on. (Tacos may be the only thing more prominent in my Instagram feed than pictures of Sunny.) All that to say that I was pretty excited to shoot for Empellóns newest addition, Al Pastor. Its a well-buzzed addition to the East Village, and for good reason: the tacos are damn good. The whole menu is good. So lets go eat some tacos.
