Yee-Shin Huang and I are in Hotel Modera -Portlands Boutique Hotel celebrating our 1-year anniversary. Tomorrow marks the first anniversary of what will be the rest of our lives together and I couldnt be happier. For those of you that know me well you know the impact this amazing man has had on my life. There wasnt anything wrong with me before or anything like that, but I certainly was not the marrying kind. I feel like Ive lived a hundred lives, and while I dont mean that in a negative way at all (my life often resembles a movie. Seriously, you couldnt make this shit up), I must say that when you find the one you are meant to be with you cant ever imagine your life without them. For our anniversary, I bought Yee-Shin a small bottle with a message typed on a scroll that reads, Shaun Knittel & Yee-Shin Huang May 25, 2013. We are going to buy a large antique bottle with a cork top and each year we are together, place the smaller bottle inside of it. It is our hope that that bottle is filled to the top to remind us of how much and how long weve loved, but also to inspire others and remind them that they too can have the chance of happiness with someone else, that you dont have to change who you are because someone out there does love you for who you are, and that our marriage is just and real and meaningful as anyones. Also accompanying the bottle and scroll was a typed poem on coffee stained paper with burned edges, closed with a wax stamp which reads: “I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where. I love you simply, without problems or pride: I love you in this way because I do not know any other way of loving but this, in which there is no I or you, so intimate that your hand upon my chest is my hand, so intimate that when I fall asleep your eyes close.” ― Pablo Neruda, 100 Love Sonnets Love is powerful and it is real. I am glad that I was vulnerable enough to give myself over to it. I made the right decision. Along the way I got wonderful advice from people that I consider invaluable to me as friends or family. Thank you Arnaldo Drag Chanteuse, Robert Matencio, George Bakan, Rev. Brandon Duran and Rev. Ray Neal.
