Yeh John, #ALS is one #terrifying, #debilitating, #efficient, #cold and #silent killer... i just dont understand why there are those so unfortunate as to be cursed with ALS (A.K.A. #LouGehrigs.) And its too rare to expect much progress in research yet :( But its not that rare: 4-5 in 100,000. It typically strikes mostly males between 20 and 40. Its partially recessively genetic and partially environmental. I personally believe ALS is mostly environmental and that its one of many such diseases caused by chemicals in our environment that s o m e h o w **trigger** the execution the wrong genetic code at the wrong time, causing waste protein residues to build up in neurons, impeding their function. Only time will tell the true cause. It kills in 3-5 years after diagnosis, sometimes sooner. IMO, the only worse neurological disease that I know of is #Huntingtons because that one is particularly humiliating, takes between 15 - 35 years and is always genetic :( ALS instead starts killing specific motor neurons until the only nerves you have left to move muscles are in your eyes. #StevenHawking has ALS. I believe that if we focus on ALS that an adequate treatment is just within reach. If we focused on it hard enough, I believe we could find a treatment that would at least halt the disease progression within 10 years. Currently, the best pharmaceutical only extends life by 2-3 months and I believe focuses on the wrong pathways: glutamate pathways. I believe the disease may progress through acetylcholinergic pathways. Certain forms of Cannabis have been know to be highly effective in treating the disease, in some cases extending life up to 10 to 15 years! And that is amazing. Hopefully things turn around soon. #Epigenetics will give us a treatment, I believe.
