Yes, I am a twit! I have gone back to study (what was I thinking!?!?! And yes...I did say NEVER AGAIN!!! Yes, you are allowed to NEVER believe anything I say again!!) I am undertaking a Masters in Perioperative Health - and one of the electives that I have taken this semester is a Health Management subject. What I am reading almost makes me want to cry. Our esteemed employer for the last as long as I can remember has never come even close to approaching its staff with these sorts of attitudes. (Might be printed on glossy brochures - but in practice...hmmm) If only it could be like this... Maybe certain people should also undertake similar courses...? (Especially if wanting to be leaders!!) Human resource management (HRM) is the more strategic and coherent approach to the management of the people in the health organization who individually and collectively contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the organization. In simple words, HRM means employing people, developing their capacities, utilizing, maintaining and compensating their services in tune with the job and organizational requirement. It aims to ensure that the organization has competent, high performing employees who can sustain performance in integrated activities over the long term. At its best, it views employees as individuals to be nurtured and developed. Commitment is often expressed in mission statements that contain references to staff being the most important asset of the organisation. It is undeniable that effective human resource management, in an employee relations and strategic HRM sense, leads to increased workplace harmony and organizational performance, improved employee commitment, lower levels of absenteeism and turnover, higher levels of skills, enhanced quality, efficiency and productivity. Essentially, the purpose of HRM is to maximize the productivity of an organization by optimizing the effectiveness of its employees.
