Yes Stephen you are correct that Sandird ave was named fir Nathan Sanford a famous politician and US Senator from Flushing. Nathan Sanford owned huge amounts of land in Flushing and built this imposing mansion on Main at Kissena. After his death it became an insane asylum owned by two brothers named McDonald who also bought up the rest of the Sanford property including what is now the famous Waldheim property although then it was just woods. It is now the Windsor School and I believe the owner in between the Windsor School and the McDonald family was a Jewish Synagogue but I could be wrong about that.
