Yes, THIS is why we never stop bugging all of you for financial support. The families with DFA service dogs report that the dogs have short-stopped hundreds of escapes by and searches for their children with autism. This alert/block/search function is perhaps the primary job of a Dogs for Autism service dog, also one of the primary tasks that make our program unique. It can be frustrating for ALL just to write a post like this, since without fail we will be promptly flooded with new requests for service dogs. We DO have the logistical ability, the breeding stock, and the expertise to produce many more service dogs than we currently do. What we dont have is the funding to hire the staff required for expansion. DFA service dogs require every bit as many hours of training as any other type of assistance dog--mobility, hearing, or guide dog, That means full time staff. It is simply not possible to produce (consistently) large numbers of high quality, reliable service dogs without the training being handled primarily by a full-time staff. Surely, among more than 30K social media followers, there might be someone who knows of foundation or corporation who would sponsor the hire of half a dozen staff?? READ THIS ARTICLE BELOW.
