Yes, indeed, a brilliant result! An important dispute for two reasons: (1) this campaign offers real prospects for a victory. If management refuse to see sense and back off from their privatisation plan, then every socialist and trade unionists should rally behind the PCS National Gallery branch in the same way that people supported the BECTU A Living Wage for Ritzy Staff strikers. (2) there is a real sense of crisis developing across the arts & culture sector. People have digested the implications of Osbornes financial plans - and they know that many arts organisations would be obliterated if the coalition were to be re-elected. Theres a real sense of the need for a united campaign developing amongst creatives, (i.e. artists, film-makers, writers, performers, etc), those who put the show on, (i.e. union members), and, indeed, audiences. A successful outcome at the National Gallery would give a real boost to the campaign to stop cuts to arts budgets and the case for greater investment. Everyone whos interested in defending arts & culture should register to come to the SERTUC conference on the future for arts & culture being held at TUC HQ in London on 14 March.
