Yes, it is true. IT IS! 70,000 Mormon missionaries currently serving. Now that the Church has dropped the minimum age requirements for male missionaries from 19 to 18, and for sister missionaries from age 21 to age 19, the Church has been flooded with missionary applications. By the end of the year, 85,000 missionaries will be serving around the world. 20% of those serving will be sisters, for a period of 18 months rather than for the 24 months served by their male counterparts. Say what you will, there is something inspiring about clean cut, clean living, young men and women who unselfishly choose to serve the Lord, as for instance, the 26 recent 2013 graduates from Woods Cross High School in Utah who have already received their mission calls. There are hundreds of athletes who will serve missions prior to entering college, athletes such as Desert Hills High (St. George, Utah) champion hurdler Brad Wulfenstein, who recently signed a letter of intent, agreeing to join the BYU track team on a full scholarship after his LDS church mission to Uganda. Missions are hard work, often fraught with danger and living in conditions somewhat different from the comforts of the home left behind, with rejection and ridicule a constant. But where ever in this wide world they serve, these young men and women come to love those they serve, and carry those feelings with them throughout their lives. They tend to become achievers and model citizens, and the Steve Youngs and Mitt Romneys of the world. Not too bad a return for 18 months to 2 years of a young persons life, you think? Invite them into your home, and find out for yourself what motivates such young people. You will find them to be the salt of the earth. (Posted by Cristobal Lopez)
