Yes, yes, hes right! Pawan Kumar writes: Any cure for What do I get Syndrome ? Just for motivation, I sat through the whole of Making of Gravity yesterday. Now I am not sure if I am motivated or depressed Lets keep aside the budget for a moment. What made me feel a lil low is the way they approach work and the way we do. There are SOOOOOOO many people involved and collaborating in making the writer/directors vision come alive on screen. But at the end of the day, the ones who will be remembered are the two actors and may be for some, the director as well. The entire crew is aware of it, but they are not behind that recognition. Their journey is more towards excelling at the job given to them... and they do JUST THAT. There is an entire team which is working on the EARTH in the background. So for years together they didnt bother about anything but just getting the earth in the background to look perfect. And an entire team working on the starfield... they did their best to get it as close to reality. The best part is the costume designers... they did all of that knowing that its just a reference for the CG team. The actors probably never wore it. Not sure how many of you know... the only thing that is real in that movie are the FACES of the two actors. (Sandras body is used only in the sequences where she is in the innerwear) else everything is CG! Being a filmmaker here, the biggest challenge I face is finding a professional to collaborate with (there are very few one would find). We really do lack that approach towards collaborative excellence. This also stems from the way the society looks at us. Constantly pushed by the family and friends to be the TOP guy! Cant blame them bcoz we are a society which values only people at the TOP. We dont realize that the guy on the top is up there bcoz of all the people holding him below. Dignity of work/labor and deserving remunerations could be the answer. If you are a supporting actor, youd be constantly asked - When will you be the hero? . If you are an asst Director, invariably it is assumed that you have to become a director one day, and if you dont then its considered as your failure. The truth is that we lack professional asst directors. One could be a professional asst director all his life, in Hollywood, a UPM (Unit production manager) could be more experienced than the director and could be earning more. Here, especially in Kannada bcoz that is what I have seen, one is pushed to do the journey towards being the boss... I am a classic case of this syndrome. I think I migrated from being a supporting actor to a writer, to associate director and then to director and now to a producer bcoz all along the journey I never got the due credit or the deserving pay. In terms of facial recognition, yes Sandra and George will be the face of Gravity for ever... but that is for the Non Industry people. Within the Industry, the entire crew will be getting its due credit for having worked on that film. Its there on that resume and that has value. Here in India... there is no resume for Film Industry, may be its changing in Hindi and Tamil industry. Otherwise, your resume is how much money did your last film make.... I am not kidding, that really is the evaluation criteria. If you have worked in a blockbuster movie, then you will get paid well in the next. Doesnt matter how bad your work was in that movie. I have seen extremely well qualified, talented, deserving cinematographers still being out of work bcoz they havent been part of a HIT film. While a really under qualified DOP is super busy... just bcoz his previous movie worked at the box office. How does one then train himself to be better at the job, how does one gather more skills, when the industry doesnt ever value it ? You get the picture, right? While watching behind the scenes, I figured that, Alfanso the director had the final vision (mostly) and he was completely depending on the crew around him to help him get there. All the technology, the vfx etc etc... everything is such a collaborative process and the most important for all of it to come true. No one will know who those people are... but those people know what they did for Gravity. They will die with that satisfaction. We as a society need to bring in that point of view in our youngsters. They need to be made aware that they can be happy with what they achieve and dont need to worry about how many see them achieve it. While doing Lucia, I guess, as I director I did that job only for about 20% of the entire time. The rest of the time, it is being involved in every other department... it is super tiring... you start feeling burnt out. May be one of the reasons why the next indie movie looks so daunting. What do I get? needs to quickly change to What do we get? and things will get much better... for everyone.
