Yesterday, Brendon showed me his homework for the week. He has a little project about sharing who his hero is. When telling me, he started with, Im sorry mom, I dont want to upset you but...my hero is my Grandfather Spear. First, what a sweet boy to try not to disappoint me - I was not disappointed at all...lol. I am thrilled he can look beyond his dad and me. He should be inspired by the many wonderful people who have paved the way for him. Second, he never met his Grandfather Spear because he passed long before Brendon was born. However, his Grandfather left quite a legacy. A man who served his country, lost his eyesight in the Korean War, came home to work until he retired, never once complaining about his disability. To Carl Spear, Jr. he was a fully able to live his life and proud to have served his country. He raised and supported 5 children. He never complained. He was Union President for Union Electric....I could go on and on. Most of all he inspires those he left behind. Brendon is faced with adversity and his Grandfather Spear would be so proud of his Grandson who never complains. He works hard to prove that a stroke before birth and the long-lasting devastating effects of that stroke will not define him. Brendon wants to make sure that anyone who ever suffers a stroke, young or old, knows that there are people who care and are working to make the world a better place for them. I just wonder if we asked Carl Spear, Jr. who his hero is, if it would be his Grandson?! Brendon is my hero! PS: Babies, even unborn, and children have strokes, too!
