Yesterday, Dr. Elizabeth Debold and Dr. Warren Farrell accompanied me for a very unique three-way discussion that took us on a deep-dive exploration of men, women, and the future of gender. As part of the preparation for the launch of my co-edited anthology coming out later this month, Elizabeth and Warren (two separate contributors to our book, best-selling authors, and recognized experts in the field of gender studies), came together for a trialogue that would explore what an integrated approach to women and men’s studies, beyond polarization and finger-pointing, might look like for the future. This trialogue takes a fascinating sweep of history, and explores a unique set of perspectives on how gender has evolved and transformed as we moved from tribes, to medieval feudal structures, to the great upheavals of the industrial revolution, and to where the currents of change are pointing us next. We explore some of the greatest practical challenges facing men and women over the coming decades, including a re-visioning and integration of the “masculine” and “feminine” spheres of Western culture, and how both women and men can better support each other in this time of transition. This was a deep and fascinating trialogue and the issues explored will touch all of those who have a theoretical and/or practical interest in the topics.
